MEN'S SOCCER OUT SHOOTS BEHREND BUT FALLS SHORT

Box Score Box Score

Erie, Pa. (9/4/2010) - The Utica College men's soccer team out shot host Penn State Behrend 18-10 and earned a 4-0 corner kick advantage, but the Pioneers fell just short of a dramatic comeback, losing 2-1 at the Herb Lauffer Memorial Tournament Saturday in the season opener for UC. Junior defender Shane Witteman headed home the Pioneers' lone goal of the contest in the 63rd minute. Senior Robert Sgueglia came off the bench and made an immediate impact by assisting Peterson on the Pioneer goal.

The Pioneers (0-1) will look to rebound Sunday when they take on McDaniel College in the consolation contest. Freshman Trevor Hoxie led the way for UC with five shots, but unfortunately Behrend goalie Chris Bolea stood on his head, making six saves, to earn the victory.

UC out shot Behrend 8-3 in the first half but the Lions squeaked in goals in the ninth and 16th minutes to take an early 2-0 advantage. The Pioneers went on to out shoot the Lions 10-7 in the second half but only Witteman's goal found the back of the net to cut the score to 2-1 with under 27 minutes to go.

Freshman Andrew Boniche (Trumbull, CT/St. Luke's) made three saves in net for Utica.

The Pioneers contest against McDaniel begins at 2 p.m.
