Utica, NY (11/17/14) – Senior Samantha Stayer of the Utica College women’s basketball team was named the College’s Female Athlete of the Week, Monday, for her performance in the season opener.
Stayer picked up where she left off last season, as she led the Pioneers to their season-opening win against SUNY Potsdam, 65-54. Stayer put up the first three points for Utica; she made one of two free throws and then one minute later she drove to the lane and finished a layup. Stayer led the team with 19 points and added seven rebounds and three steals. She averaged a team best .571% from the floor, which ranks her third in the Empire 8.
This marks the fifth straight time the two institutions opened up the season against each other. UC has now won four of the five. Last year, Stayer, averaged 12.8 points per game ranking her second on the team. She also appeared in all 25 games and started in 21. Stayer scored a career-high 30 points against Houghton College on 2/11/14.
The Pioneers will host a non-conference game against Oneonta Tuesday night. The game is set to tip-off at 6 p.m.
