Utica, N.Y. (1/10/2011) - Senior forward
Jessica Berry of the Utica College women's basketball team was named the Empire 8 Conference Player of the Week and the College's Female Athlete of the Week Monday. Berry has been named the E8 Player of the week four times this year and she has garnered the honor 13 times of the course of her career.
She averaged 23.5 points, 11.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 3.5 steals per game as the Pioneers' went 2-0 in Empire 8 Conference play this past weekend. She shot 59 percent (20-of-34) from the floor and also dished out 1.5 assists per game.
Berry netted a game-high 22 points en route to breaking the program's all-time scoring record as Utica downed visiting St. John Fisher College 77-66 Friday night. The reigning conference player of the year now has 1,810 career points and eclipsed the original mark of 1,769 set by All-American and Pioneer Hall of Famer Sharon Lyke in 1985. Berry now needs 77 rebounds to join Lyke as the second player in school-history to score 1,000 points and grab 1,000 rebounds. She went on to add 25 points and a game-high 13 rebounds in the Pioneers' 66-56 win over Alfred on Saturday afternoon.
Berry, who was a D3hoops.com All-American one year ago, currently leads the conference and ranks in the top ten nationally averaging 21.8 points per game. She is also averaging 11 rebounds per contest.
Utica (6-6, 2-1 E8) has now won two in a row headed into Tuesday night's E8 matchup against Ithaca College on the hardwood at the Clark Athletic Center. The contest is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Check www.ucpioneers.com for links to live video, audio and stats.
