Elmira, NY – The Utica College men's tennis team traveled to face Elmira College in the first match of the 2018 spring season on Saturday. UC lost to the Soaring Eagles, 9-0, and begin the season with a 0-1 record.
In fifth singles,
Garrett Bortiatynski (Rome, NY/Holland Patent) lost to Ravi Chauma with the two set scores of 6-4 and 7-5. Freshman
Christian Carman () lost both sets as well in his collegiate debut 6-2, 6-2.
Austyn Diller (Tappan, NY/Tappan Zee) lost 6-0, 6-3 in the third singles match.
Ben Gilroy () was also competing in his first collegiate tennis match on the day, dropping both sets 6-0, 6-0 in second singles.
The duo of
Alfonzo Whitehurst (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville) and
Joshua Palmer (Southington, CT/Wilcox Technical) lost in the third doubles heat 8-1. The doubles pairs of
Paul Litvak (Brooklyn, NY/Abraham Lincoln)/
Austyn Diller (Tappan, NY/Tappan Zee) and
Ben Gilroy ()/
Garrett Bortiatynski (Rome, NY/Holland Patent) were both downed 8-0 in their sets.
The Pioneers return to action on April 6th for their home opener. The team is set to host Nazareth College for a 3:30 p.m. start time.
