Utica, NY - The Utica College men's tennis team fell 5-4 to St. John Fisher in the team's final regular season game of the year on Sunday afternoon.
LJ Nuzzo (Peru, NY/Peru Central) and Austin McGrain (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford) secured an 8-6 win in the first doubles match thanks to a strong comeback effort. The pair trailed 6-1 before taking the next seven sets to pick up the Pioneers' only doubles win of the afternoon.
Nuzzo went on to capture a 6-2, 2-6, 8-6 win in the first singles match. McGrain followed by winning the second singles match 6-0, 6-3. Maki Medici (Watervliet, NY/Shaker) won in three sets in the third singles match as well, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6. Fisher went on to take the final three singles matches to go home 5-4 winners.
UC will be in action again on Wednesday in the Empire 8 Conference Tournament. The team will travel to Alfred University to take on the four-seeded Saxons while the time of the match is TBD.
