UTICA, NY - The Utica University tennis team beat Russell Sage 5-4 in a non-conference match to pick up its first win of the season.
 
The Pioneers took one doubles match with Callie Ott (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) and Lyndsey Tiedemann (Salt Point, NY/Franklin D Roosevelt) earning a decisive 8-3 victory. Utica did great in singles winning four of the six possible games. Ellen Lyga (New Hartford, NY/Notre Dame) earned a 6-7, 6-3, 5-2 win on retired while Lyndsey Tiedemann (Salt Point, NY/Franklin D Roosevelt) won her singles bout 6-3, 7-6. Victoria Elefante (Clinton, NY/Clinton) won her match 6-3, 6-1 while Jackie Roberts (Herkimer, NY/Notre Dame) picked up the decisive victory winning 6-4, 6-4.
 
Utica (1-1) will hit the road and face Alfred University in an Empire 8 bout on Saturday, September 16 at 1 p.m.
