BROCKPORT, NY – The Utica University women's tennis team traveled to Brockport on Friday afternoon, taking on the Golden Eagles in the team's penultimate matchup. Despite a strong singles performance from Lyndsey Tiedemann (Salt Point, NY/Franklin D. Roosevelt), the Pioneers fell to Brockport, 6-1.
Brockport opened the afternoon by sweeping all three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead. Tiedemann and Averi Kraeger (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) competed at No. 1 doubles, falling 6-3 to Cara Vasile and Leah Banes. Hannah Loebbaka (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) and Andrea May (McGraw, NY/McGraw) took the court at No. 2, while Hannah Slater (Schenectady, NY/Colonie Central) and Saige Burton (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) competed at No. 3.
Utica responded in singles play with a hard-fought victory from Tiedemann at the top of the lineup. After dropping the opening set 6-2 to Vasile, Tiedemann delivered an impressive comeback, taking the second set 6-1 before closing out the third, 6-2, to secure the Pioneers' lone point of the afternoon. Tiedemann got a massive win to cap off her second-to-last match in the orange and blue.
Andrea May (McGraw, NY/McGraw) also put together a competitive performance at No. 5 singles, pushing her match against Gianna Masker to a deciding third set. May bounced back from a 6-2 opening-set loss to claim the second set 6-3, but ultimately fell just short in the third, 7-2.
The Pioneers continued to compete throughout the remaining singles matches, with Kraeger, Loebbaka, Alexis Brennan (Vernon, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) and Burton representing Utica across the lineup.
Utica will look to build on Tiedemann's comeback win and May's three-set effort as the Pioneers look to wrap up their season on Saturday afternoon against Nazareth on senior day.
