Pioneers Hit The Road for Final Indoor Tuneup With This Friday's SLU Open

CANTON, NY - The Utica University track and field team will head on the road to the Newell Field House this Friday, visiting the St. Lawrence University Open at 4:00 PM. After hosting this past weekend's Pioneer Fast Trax Invite, the team will look to hit the ground running as they head into the climax of the indoor season. This will be the last meet for the Pioneers before they voyage to Rochester next weekend in hopes of gathering a bevy of gold at the Empire 8 Indoor Championships.

This Weekend's Event: The SLU Open will take place on Friday, February 20th, at 4:00 PM at the Newell Field House in Canton, New York.

Team Scoring: St. Lawrence traditionally tracks team scoring at their home events, including their opening two meets at the Newell Field House earlier this season. Keep an eye on the results page for any team scoring.

Record Reachers: Last weekend at the Pioneer Fast Trax Invite, the Pioneers broke a school record and a facility record on the track, along with another facility record during a field event.

On Saturday, February 14th, in the women's 300m, Shiann Williams (Bronx, NY/Hydel) broke the program record with a time of 40.33. Williams' mark was also good enough to see her break the facility record. Williams finished first in the race.

Over on the infield, junior thrower Allie Cary (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) tossed a 14.19m in the shotput, breaking the facility record and finishing first. Cary blew away the competition in the event, with her longest throw traveling over 1.20m farther than the second place participant.

There were 11 separate Pioneer top-five times. Firstly, there were five new #2 all-time program times. Allie Cary (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) finished with a 14.19m throw for shotput, placing in 1st place. Forest Martin (Poland, NY/Poland Central) finished with a 1:24.17 in the 600m, placing 1st. Spencer Borghardt (Smithtown, NY/St.Anthony's) finished with a 17.79m in the weight throw, placing 2nd. Lacey Simmons (Vernon Center, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) finished with a 1:42.19 in the 600m, placing 2nd. Catherine Manna (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) finished with a 2:21.81 in the 800m, placing 4th.

There were also pairs of third, fourth, and fifth all-time record finishes. Olivia Jensen (Red Hook, NY/Red Hook) finished with a 9.37 in the 60mh, placing 4th (#3 all-time). Killian Bauer (Verona, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherill) finished with an 8:46.97 in the 3000m, placing 5th (#3 all time). Shiann Williams (Bronx, NY/Hydel) finished with a 25.62 on Friday, placing 11th (#4 all-time). Anthony Leotta (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills West) finished with a 2:35.07 in the 1000m, placing 2nd (#4 all-time). Tobias Jeralds (Canaan, NY/Chatham Central) finished with a 2:36.72 in the 1000m, placing 3rd (#5 all-time). Finally, Wayne Spencer (Rochester, NY/Padilla (Franklin Campus)) finished with a 6.84m in the long jump, placing 3rd (#5 all-time).

First Place Finishers: The Pioneers saw 11 first-place finishes at the Pioneer Fast Trax Invite.

First, Forest Martin (Poland, NY/Poland Central) finished in first place for the Men's 600m with a time of 1:24.17.

Bennett Melita (Johnstown, NY/Fonda-Fultonville) finished in first place for Men's Mile with a time of 4:23.43.

Louis Pinto (Clinton, NY/Clinton) and Kaiden McCaskill (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) both finished in first place for the Men's High Jump with a jump of 1.90m

Tanner Warren (Mohawk, NY/Central Valley Academy) finished in first place for the Men's 400m with a time of 48.89.

Laura Suppa (Canastota, NY/Canastota) finished in first place for the Women's 60mh with a time of 8.70.

Arianna McClendon (Rome, NY/New York Mills) finished in first place for the Women's 400m with a time of 59.49.

Men's DMR finished with a time of 10:38.00.

Men's 4x400 finished with a time of 3:28.25.

Lastly, the aforementioned Allie Cary (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) claimed victory in the Women's Shot Put with a toss of 14.19m

AARTFC Qualifiers: The Pioneers have notched many qualifying times so far through the first few indoor meets of the season. Here is a look at who qualified last week for the AARTFC meet in early March:

Killian Bauer (Verona, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherill) - Men's 3000m - 5th - 8:46.97

Following This Weekend's SLU Open: The Pioneers will travel to Rochester, NY, to compete in the Empire 8 Indoor Championships on Friday, February 27th, starting at 2:00 PM, and Saturday, February 28th, starting at 11:00 AM. The conference championship will take place at the Golisano Training Center on the campus of Nazareth University.
