BIRMINGHAM, AL - This weekend, the Pioneers sent three spectacular athletes down south to compete in the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships. Against the best of the best, the trio of
Spencer Borghardt (Smithtown, NY/St.Anthony's),
Laura Suppa (Canastota, NY/Canastota), and
Allie Cary (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) more than held their own, with each athlete finishing in the top 16 and achieving Second Team All-America honors.
Friday
Spencer Borghardt (Smithtown, NY/St.Anthony's) led off for the orange and blue, competing in the very first event of the meet, taking on the nation's strongest in the Men's Weight Throw. The senior strongman would make his mark in the contest, grabbing an 11th-place finish with a long-toss of 18.06. Borghardt, who was seeded 13th, climbed his way up to 11th, ranking just outside a stacked top 10. Thanks to his 11th-place finish, he was awarded NCAA Division III All-America Second Team honors, given to each athlete who places from 9th-16th in any National Championships event.
Suppa was up next, taking on the 60m Hurdles during an afternoon preliminary race. Suppa would showcase her usual speed, grabbing 10th place thanks to a blistering 8.71 time, however, she would fall just short of the cutline needed to make Saturday's finals, as only the top eight would qualify for the race to crown the National Champion. Despite this, Suppa became the second Pioneer to be honored with All-America Second Team honors during the weekend.
Saturday
Allie Cary (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) took center stage on Saturday for the Pioneers, competing in the Women's Shot Put to finish out the weekend. Cary, one of two sophomores participating in the event, managed to solidify her spot among Division III's best, grabbing a top toss of 13.29m to take 10th place, securing the team's third All-American selection of the weekend as she achieved All-American Second Team.Â
The Pioneers will now move into the outdoor portion of their season, welcoming an array of teams next weekend for the Utica Almost Spring Invite. That meet takes place at the Casamento Field Athletic Complex next Saturday, starting at 9:00 AM.
