Nicholas Rogers (Broad Channel, NY) and
Marlo Townsend (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) have been named the Pioneer Athletes of the Week for the week of March 9th.
Rogers proved to be the hero in the Pioneers' 4-1 UCHC Championship win over rival Geneseo, sealing the victory with a late game-winning goal. Moments after Geneseo tied the game up at 1-1, Rogers, the midseason transfer from UCHC foe Manhattanville, grabbed the puck in the neutral zone and swerved around the entire Ice Knight defense before landing an iconic wrap-around score to give the orange and blue a 2-1 advantage. That goal would force Geneseo to pull their goalie in the final few minutes, leading to a pair of empty net scores to bring the game to its final of 4-1. Rogers was named the UCHC Tournament MVP for his clutch play.
Rogers and the men's hockey team will take on Williams College this Saturday in the first round of this year's NCAA Division III Men's Hockey Tournament. That game is scheduled for a 7:00 PM start time.
Townsend had an excellent weekend for the Pioneers during an AARTFC outing that saw the program achieve seven new school records, along with the women's team placing 11th out of 60. Townsend toppled two of those seven school records, setting new program bests in the 3000m (10:12.48 - 9th place) and the 5000m (18:14.48 - 12th place) to help the team compete against the best in the northeast.
Three track athletes, Spencer Borghardt,
Allie Cary (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), and
Laura Suppa (Canastota, NY/Canastota) will head down to Birmingham, Alabama this Saturday to conclude the indoor portion of the Pioneers' season at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships.
