Coach Damian Boehlert was named the first head coach in the history of the Utica flag football program, being hired alongside the announcement of the program during the spring of 2026.Â
A Utica, New York native, Coach Boehlert had spent a plethora of time at Utica University ahead of his hiring in 2026, serving the University in some capacity since 1999. He graduated from nearby Utica Notre Dame High School in 1992. Following his high school graduation, Coach Boehlert hopped right into the sport of flag football, playing amateur flag football for 32 years from 1993-2025, while picking up coaching later in his playing days, having coached the sport since 2021. During his time in the amateur ranks, he won eight league championships, displaying his knowledge of what it takes to win during the developing stages of a rising NCAA sport.Â
Coach Boehlert was a perfect fit to begin the women's flag football program at Utica, something he was excited to undergo, stating; "We will be building something huge as a new program at Utica. We intend to compete, grow, lead, and represent the University. The foundation of the program will be built upon empowerment, unity, competition, education, and creating an opportunity for the next generation of student-athletes. Flag football is one of the fastest growing sports in the world and we are bringing the sport to the collegiate level. Coach Boehlert resides in his native Mohawk Valley alongside his wife and four children, where he enjoyes all manner of sport, including basketball, softball, golf, boating, traveling, and football.
