Utica, NY (1-9-12) – Sophomore Jon Gaffney, of the nationally-ranked No. 10 Utica College men’s hockey team, was named the College’s Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending Jan. 8.
Gaffney recorded six points over the weekend as he led UC to back-to-back wins at the friendly confines of the Utica Memorial Auditorium. On Friday, he set-up teammate Chris Santiago just 1:42 into the contest to give UC a 1-0 lead and then cushioned the squad a little over seven minutes later with a 2-0 lead at 7:46. The sophomore forward capped off the night with an empty-netter at 18:29 to seal the 5-2 victory. He added a team-high three assists in the Pioneers 7-5 win over Curry on Saturday.
The Dover, NH native is second on the team in goals with eight and he is fifth in points with 14. Gaffney has four multi-point games this season including a hat-trick on Dec. 10 against Salve Regina.
The Pioneers have won three-straight and are 9-1 at “The Aud” in front of an average home crowd of 3,291 fans. UC is 11-4 overall including a 1-3 mark in the ECAC Men’s West Conference.
