Utica, NY (3-19-12) – Junior Ben Winkler, of the Utica College men’s lacrosse team, was named the Empire 8 Conference Player of the Week and the UC Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending Mar. 18, 2012. This distinction marks the second time this season that Winkler has earned player of the week honors.
Winkler, UC’s leading scorer, totaled 14 goals and 18 points in a 2-1 week for Utica. He netted five goals and three assists in the Pioneers’ 19-11 win over Neumann on Thursday and finished with six goals and an assist as Utica edged Vassar 13-12 on Saturday.
The Rodman, NY native currently has a team-best 27 points on 23 goals and four dishes. Winkler also has gathered seven ground balls and caused four turnovers, while starting all five games for Utica.
The Pioneers have jumped out to 4-1 overall while outscoring their opponents 74-46. UC returns to action Wednesday as it travels to Oswego, NY to face Oswego State. Face-off is set for 4 p.m. against the Lakers.
