UTICA, NY - Freshman Tyler Evans (Rome, NY/Holland Patent) of Utica College swim and dive team was named Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending Jan. 23.
Evans won his individual freestyle events and helped the Pioneers to a second place finish in the men’s relay Saturday when the Pioneers visited Clarkson University.
He won the men’s 100 meter freestyle in a time 57.38, approximately .25 seconds faster than his second place opponent Paul Telesca of Clarkson University. He also registered a winning time of 5:07.26 in the men’s 400 meter freestyle, beating his teammate Josh Mannarino by five seconds.
Evans worked with teammates Paul Cabrey, Scott Wanner and Brandon DiPasquale to capture second place in the men’s 400 meter medley relay. UC clocked a time of 4:33.29, just one tenth of a second behind Clarkson.
Evans has won his last four races and recently broke the College's 50 yard freestyle record with a time of 22.34. He also has team-high nine individual victories this season.
UC is now 2-6 and will return to action on Saturday as it hosts Nazareth College. The meet will be held at The Utica College Pool and is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
