Utica, NY (4-8-13) – Freshman pitcher Abby Monroe, of the Utica College softball team, was named the College’s Female Athlete of the Week Monday for her impressive performance on the mound this past week.
Monroe, a Watertown, NY native, led the Pioneers with two shut out wins this past week against Houghton College and Alfred University. On Friday, she tossed four shutout innings allowing just two hits while fanning seven as UC downed the Highlanders 12-0 in five innings. The first-year Pioneer followed up with a complete game shutout on Saturday giving UC its’ first conference win of the season as she allowed five hits, no walks while striking out another seven to move her overall record to 6-4.
On the season, Monroe is second in the conference in wins (six), third in strikeouts (42) and fourth in earned run average (1.69). She leads UC in almost all major pitching categories including innings (49.2), strikeouts (42), appearances (12), starts (eight), wins (six) and complete games (three).
The Pioneers currently hold a 12-8 overall record including a 1-3 mark in Empire 8 play. UC returns home Tuesday as it opens up a 10-game, five day home stand against cross town rival Hamilton College. First pitch of game one is set for 5 p.m. at Greenman Field.
