Utica, NY (February 3, 2014) – Senior distance runner Katie Day, of the Utica College women's track and field team, was named the College's Female Athlete of the Week for her performance on Saturday at the Empire 8 Championships.

Day shattered her own school-record with a victory in the 1-mile run clocking a time of 5:20.16, collecting ten points for the Pioneers. Her previous best time was 5:23.85.

She has one previous first place finish this season in the 4 x 800 relay and finished fourth in the mile run at the Hamilton meet. This was her first Empire 8 Championship indoor victory in her four year career. She has an E8 Championship win in the 3000m Steeplechase event at the 2012 outdoor meet.

Ithaca (168.5 points) won the conference title while Stevens (73) placed second ahead St. John Fisher (63.5) who finished third. Utica finished fourth (57).

The Pioneers have three scheduled meets remaining before post-season competition begins.  UC returns to action Saturday, Feb. 8 as the squad heads to the College at Brockport for a 10 a.m. competition.
