Utica, NY (10/27/14) – Sophomore midfielder Matt Beljan of the Utica College men’s soccer team was named the College’s Co-Male Athlete of the Week for his performance against St. John Fisher on Saturday.
Beljan recorded his first career goal in dramatic fashion as the Pioneers defeated Fisher, 2-0. After nearly 90 minutes of scoreless action, Beljan received a pass from Ricky Drake and beat his defender for the game-winning goal in the 88th minute. With this goal, Beljan now has three career points at UC.
With the win, Utica improves to 6-7-3 overall and 3-3 in the Empire 8. The Pioneers are now tied with Nazareth College for fourth place in the Conference with one game remaining in the regular season. If Utica defeats Alfred University next Saturday (4 p.m.), the Pioneers will clinch a spot in the E8 Tournament.
The Pioneers hit the road Wednesday for a non-conference match up against Plattsburgh State. The game is set to start at 7 p.m.
