Utica, NY (November 11, 2014) – Senior defenseman Amanda Vitro of the Utica College field hockey team was named the College's Female Athlete of the Week for her performance across the Empire 8 Conference tournament this past weekend.
She was named Empire 8 Conference All-Tournament Most Valuable Player and was joined by teammates Kells Casey, Hannah Mackey, and Alaina Stojkovski.
Vitro helped lead the Pioneer defense to back-to-back tournament wins and allowed only two goals, both in the semi-final game. She also aided the defense in the championship game shutout against Fisher.
Vitro has played and started in every game this season. She has played the full 70 minutes of every game except the first of the season, only missing six minutes.
This is the third straight year the Pioneers will host a first round NCAA game after winning their third Empire 8 Conference title. The Pioneers will host Fairleigh Dickinson University at Florham in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.
