UTICA, NY – Freshman thrower Breiten Balschmiter (Newark, NY/Newark) of the Utica College men's track and field team was named the College's Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending March 9.
Balschmiter placed second in the men’s shot put with a throw of 14.26 meters, third in the discus with a distance of 42.88 meters, and fourth in the hammer throw with a toss of 41.77 meters at Cornell Spring Invitational Saturday.
During the indoor track season, he eclipsed the NCAA provisional cut mark with throws of 15.87 and 15.86 in the men’s shot put. He was the program’s first national provisional qualifier ranked in the top 20 nationally. Balschmiter also qualified for the ECAC Track & Field Championships and received First Team All-Conference status in shot put.
For the outdoor season, Breiten has recorded six top-ten performances. He has one victory, two second-place finishes, one third-place finish and two fourth places.
The Pioneers will return to the track on April 17 when they travel to Rochester Institute of Technology for the Empire 8 Outdoor Championships. The meet is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
