Utica, N.Y. (9/5/2011) – Junior quarterback Andrew Benkwitt was named the Utica College Male Athlete of the Week after completing 25-of-32 passes for 233 yards, to go along with three touchdowns, in the Pioneers’ 45-38 season-opening victory over St. Lawrence University Saturday.

Benkwitt started his junior season on the right foot and at one point he guided the Pioneers’ offensive unit to six consecutive touchdowns. In the first half alone he helped UC compile five touchdowns, 335 yards of total offense and a 26-point lead over the reigning Liberty League Conference Champions.

He was nearly perfect on the day, throwing zero interceptions, while completing 78.1 percent of his passes – good for second on the College’s single game completion percentage list.

During the St. Lawrence game, Benkwitt became the first quarterback in school-history to throw for over 5,000 yards in a career. In 21 career games he has 446 completions for 5,212 yards and 42 touchdowns.

The Pioneers will host non conference foe Union College (0-1) next Saturday night at 7 p.m. for their first game on the brand new turf at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium. Fans can listen to the game on the radio locally at WTLB 1310 AM and WPNR 907.FM or out-of-towners can follow the game through live video, audio and stats online at www.ucpioneers.com.
