Utica, N.Y. (10/11/2011) – Freshman Alyssa Nicotera (New York Mills/New York Mills) of the Utica College volleyball team was named the Empire 8 Conference Rookie of the Week and the College's Female Athlete of the Week for the first time in her career on Monday.
Nicotera totaled a team-high 22 kills as the Pioneers' played four games at the Oswego State Invitational last weekend. She tallied her first career double-double on Saturday when she posted a career-high ten kills and added ten digs in the Pioneers' 3-1 loss to Alfred. She averaged 2.43 digs per game and she posted at least six digs in all four matches this past weekend.
Nicotera has played in all 24 games this season and she leads the team in several major statistical categories including digs (183), kills (108), and service aces (21). She has posted double-digit dig efforts on eight different occasions this season.
The Pioneers are set to host their “Dig Pink" game on October 19th at 7 p.m. against Morrisville State College. The Dig Pink event will begin at 6 p.m. in the gymnasium as the Pioneers' prepare to take on the Mustangs. UC will host a bake sale, a 50/50 raffle, a basket raffle, and sell remembrance balloons. All proceeds will go directly to the Side-Out Foundation in support of breast cancer awareness, education, and patient services.
