UTICA, NY (10/24/2011) - Senior captain Zachary Jensen of the Utica College football team was named the Empire 8 Conference Defensive Player of the Week and the College's Male Athlete of the Week after a break out performance in the Pioneers' 20-15 win over Ithaca College Saturday.
Jensen, who has been a wide receiver for his entire career, was playing in just his second game at the linebacker position when helped guide the Pioneers' to their third straight victory. Jensen recorded a career-high seven tackles, with six solo hits, and he tied the school's single-game record for sacks. All three of his sacks came in the second half, including a show-stopper on the second to last play of the game.
Jensen, a 6-foot-4 211-pounder, has been a jack of all trades for the Pioneers this season. He has played wide receiver, line backer and several different positions on special teams.
The Pioneers, who need one more win to tie the school-record for wins in a single season, are currently 5-2 overall and 2-2 in the Empire 8 Conference. UC returns to action Saturday as they travel to Pittsford, NY to take on rival St. John Fisher College. The E8 Conference game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. The Cardinals are 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the Empire 8.
