BROCKPORT, NY - The Pioneer football team dropped a 49-0 decision to nationally ranked Brockport State on Saturday afternoon at Special Olympics Stadium in Brockport, NY. The win allowed Brockport to remain perfect on the year at 3-0, while Utica fell to 0-3.
The Brockport offensive and defensive units combined to post 28 unanswered first-quarter points. The offense led the game off with a pair of touchdown passes from quarterback Bob Darnley to receivers Matt Boorom and Darin Brady, while the defense closed out the opening quarter with a 32-yard interception return by Joe Toombs and a 15-yard blocked punt return by Jimmy Robertson.
Completing the Golden Eagle's offensive onslaught on the day was Jeremy Lynch, who returned a 33-yard interception for a touchdown early in the second quarter, Boorom, who caught Darnley's third end zone pass of the day from 18 yards out, and A.J. Covella, who tallied six of his 73 total yards rushing with an end zone dash midway through the third quarter.
Senior linebacker
Anthony Venturino (Utica, NY/DeSales) led the Pioneer defense for the third consecutive week, tallying a game-high 11 tackles. Other top performers for UC included freshman defensive lineman
Michael Sanchez (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford), senior defensive back
JP Lignowski (Walden, NY/Valley Central) and senior linebacker
Jason Colunio (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua) with seven tackles each.
The Pioneers' offensive woes continued, as a talented Brockport defensive unit held UC to only 108 yards of total offense, and limited the team to only a single third down conversion on 14 attempts.
Sophomore quarterback
Emilio Gigliotti (Rensselaer, NY/Rensselaer) connected with junior receiver
Josh Osborn (West Edmeston, NY/Edmeston) for a 42-yard reception to mark one of the Pioneers' few offensive highlights. Sophomore punter
Brian Paonessa (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) sailed seven punts for 244 total yards (34.9 avg.).
The Pioneers will look to capture their first victory of the season next week at home, when they welcome conference competitor Hartwick College for a 1:30 p.m. contest.
