The Utica College field hockey team scored two goals within 3:12 of each other in the second half to guide the Pioneers to a
2-1 victory over host Geneseo State Wednesday afternoon.
The Pioneers improved to 4-6 overall, while the Blue Knights dropped to 4-7 on the year. UC has not lost to Geneseo in five meetings, out scoring the Blue Knights 12-6.
Senior captain
Laurie Calvasina (Vestal/Apalachin) was the hero once again netting the game-winner with 9:14 left in regulation. Senior co-captain
Meghan Zaklukiewicz (Little Falls/Little Falls) made a nice crossing pass from 25 yards out that Calvasina deflected past Geneseo goalie Emily O'Leary to close out the scoring. Calvasina leads the team with 17 points on eight goals and one assist this season.
Lauren McCauley set up Stephanie Honsinger off a penalty corner in the 46th minute to give the Blue Knights a 1-0 lead. Freshman
Tiffany Bichrest (Hebron/Harpswell, ME) tallied the equalizer just over eleven minutes later off a Pioneer penalty corner. Bichrest, who now ranks second on the team with 10 points on three goals and four assists, was assisted by sophomore
Elizabeth Knudsen (Rome Free Academy/Rome).
UC goalie
Maggie Wright (Missisquoi Valley/Franklin, VT) improved to 2-0 in net after notching eight saves in 70:00 of work. O'Leary tallied two saves in the loss. Both teams totaled 10 penalty corners, while the Blue Knights out shot UC 10-6 on the day.
The Pioneers return to action Saturday against host Elmira College on the grass at Campus Field. The Empire 8 Conference contest is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Both squads are currently 0-2 in conference play.
