UTICA, NY – Freshman midfielder
Kathy Waite (Levittown, NY/Division Avenue) tallied a game-high four goals as the Utica College women's lacrosse team defeated visiting Cazenovia College 18-4 Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.
UC improves to 1-4 overall in its first win of the season while Caz drops to 0-3. The Pioneers defeated the Wildcats 20-3 last season.
Utica dominated the first half tallying 11 unanswered goals in the first 21 minutes of play. Waite,
Kelly Regan (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa),
Casey Pelletier (Middletown, CT/Mercy) and
Jill Doherty (Wellesley, MA/Kents Hill) each tallied two of the first 11 goals, while
Kelly Jones (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford),
Laura Keating (Whitesboro, NY/Horseheads) and
Jackie Vicencio (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) netted one goal apiece before the 21 minute mark.
Cazenovia netted its lone first-half goal when Rachel Simone (Marcellus/Syracuse) beat UC goalie
Jessica LeClerc (Augusta, ME/Deerfield Academy) with 5:11 left in the first half. UC answered right back with four goals to end the half. Vicencio, Waite, Doherty and
Annie Thiel (Hamden, CT/Hamden) netted the half's final four goals and the Pioneers took a 15-1 lead into the half.
Both teams played even in the second half tallying three goals a piece. Simone scored her second unassisted goal of the game less than two minutes into the second half. Senior defenseman
Kerri Weber (Medford, NY/Patchogue-Medford) tallied one of her two goals with 24:30 left in the game to give UC a 16-2 advantage.
Courtney Caldwell (IHC/Black River) netter her first goal of the game on an assist from Kacie Borick (Fayetteville-Manlius/Manlius) with 22:37 left on the clock to cut the Pioneers' lead to 16-3.
Weber and Waite netted the Pioneers final two goals at 10:10 and 2:55 respectively. Simone beat UC replacement goalie
Kelly George (Geneva, NY/Geneva) with 8:15 left in the game to close out the scoring for the Wildcats.
George made four saves in net for the Pioneers, while Samantha Maitland (Morrisville-Easton/Morrisville) made five stops in net for Caz.
Keating tallied a team-best seven points on six assists and one goal while Pelletier and Regan each tallied four points a piece.
UC returns to action at 4 p.m. Friday against visiting Postdam on the turf at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium. Cazenovia looks for its first win of the season as they travel to Chestnut Hill at 1 p.m. Saturday.
