PIONEERS LOSE HEART BREAKER IN OT

Lara Bucarey (Blairstown, NJ/Blair Academy) tallied her team-high fifth goal of the season 5:55 into the first overtime as the University of Rochester field hockey team defeated host Utica College 3-2 Wednesday on the turf at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.

The Pioneers now drop to 2-3 overall, while the Yellowjackets improved to 4-1. UC is 1-2 against Rochester in their past three meetings with each team totaling eight goals a piece over the course of three meetings. The Pioneers were unable to avenge last years' 4-1 loss to the Yellowjackets.

Senior midfielder Kari Plewniak (Tonawanda/Sweethome) opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when she knocked home a one-timer off an Erica Gelb (The Park School/Baltimore, MD) penalty corner. Plewniak's first goal of the season beat UC goalie Amanda McDonnell (Portsmouth Abby/Sagamore Beach, MA) stick side.

UC netted the equalizer 4:20 later when senior captain Laurie Calvasina (Vestal/Apalachin) tallied her team-high fourth goal of the season on an assist from freshman Tiffany Bichrest (Hebron/Harpswell, ME). Calvasina now has eight points this year, while Bichrest, who would later add a second assist, tallied her fifth and sixth points respectively.

UC took a 2-1 lead at 49:47 when Bichrest found reigning Empire 8 Conference Player of the Year Katie Kutas (New York Mills/New York Mills), who spun and shot beating Rochester goalie Rachel Cahan (North Shore Country Day/Evanston, IL) on the right. The play of the day goes to Cahan who made a diving blocker save to her left on a UC penalty stroke to prevent a goal in the 48th minute.

With just under twelve minutes left Amanda Case (Langley/McLean, VA) netted the game tying goal after tipping home an Alicia Citro (Acton-Boxborough/Acton, MA) slap shot from outside the circle. Case now has four goals this season.

5:55 into the first overtime period Plewniak broke through the UC backline and found Bucarey open in the circle. Buckarey took a slap shot from five yards out that beat McDonnell and ended the contest.

McDonnell ended the evening with four saves, while her counterpart, Cahan, stopped 13 shots on net.

The Pioneers return to action Sunday as they open up E8 action against visiting Ithaca College at 1:00 p.m. Rochester returns to the field against Hamilton College in Clinton, NY next Friday. The game is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
