The Utica College women's volleyball team defeated Oswego State
3-1 (30-28, 30-21, 15-30, 30-25) on day one of the Union Invitational hosted by Union College this weekend. UC lost its other three matches to Union
3-0 (30-19, 30-21, 30-15), Plattsburgh State
3-1 (30-22, 27-30, 33-31, 30-12) and Vassar
3-0 (30-20, 30-14, 30-21).
Senior
Karen Crisanti (Geneva/Geneva) earned All-Tournament team honors for the Pioneers after posting a team-high 33 kills, good for an average of 2.36 kills per game. She also totaled 14 blocks (10 BS, 4 BA) and five service aces. Crisanti broke the 100 kill barrier for the season Saturday and she now has 101 on the year.
Senior
Andrea Dekker (Reeths-Puffer/Muskegon, MI) ranked second on the team with 30 kills over the weekend. She tallied 52 digs in 12 games, good for an average of 4.33 digs per game. Freshman setter
Kaitlin Farruggia (Mt. Markham/Leonardsville) tallied 112 assists and ten kills, while
Brielle Swerdlin (W. Morris Mendham/Chester, NJ) tallied a team-high 10 service aces and ranked second on the team with six assists. Farrugia is averaging 8.28 assists per game this year.
Melissa Austin (Beaver River/Castorland) posted a team-high 86 digs (6.14 digs per game) and ranked second with nine service aces. Her 14 kills was good for third on the team. Austin has tallied a team-best 21 service aces this season.
Mereoni Vunibobo (Cathedral/Jamaica) blocked eight shots in 14 games played
The Pioneers (3-8) return to action Monday at Cazenovia College. The game is scheduled to begin 7:00 p.m. at the Stephen M. Schneeweiss Athletic Center.
