The Utica College women's field hockey team defeated host Hamilton College
5-2 Wednesday afternoon.
UC, who has out scored the Continentals 13-3 over the course of their last three meetings, improves to 2-1 on the season. The game marked the season opener for Hamilton, who drops to 0-1.
Senior captain
Laurie Calvasina (Vestal/Apalachin) opened the scoring for UC just 3:59 into the first half. Freshman
Tiffany Bichrest (Hebron/Harpswell, ME) assisted on the opening goal marking the second assist of her collegiate career.
Hamilton's
Sarah Wiener netter her first goal of the season to tie the score at 1-1 in the twenty sixth minute of the first half.
Colleen Callaghan and
Olivia Gambir assisted on Hamilton's lone first half goal.
UC went on to score four unanswered goals to seal the victory.
Alex Carletta (Rome Free Academy/Rome) netted her first collegiate goal, followed by Calvasina scoring her third goal of the season.
Elizabeth Knudsen (Rome Free Academy/Rome) assisted on both of the tallies.
Carletta then assisted sophomore
Theresa Staring (Little Falls/Little Falls) to give UC a three goal advantage. Bichrest closed out the scoring for UC in the forty fourth minute with the first goal of her career. She ranks tied for second on the team with four points this season.
Junior goalie
Maggie Wright (Missisquoi Valley/Franklin, VT) scattered two goals over 70:00 minutes of work to pace the Pioneers. She tallied two saves on the day.
The Pioneers return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Skidmore College. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. at Lower Turf Field on campus at Skidmore.
