The Utica College women's field hockey team scored two goals in the second half, but it was not enough after surrendering three first half goals and the Pioneers lost
3-2 against St. Lawrence in the season opener for both squads at the Oneonta Invitational Saturday.
The Pioneers drop to 0-1 on the season, while the Saints open the season with a victory. UC returns to the field Sunday to square off against Alvernia College at noon. Dating back to last season the Pioneers last five losses have come by just one goal.
Senior forward
Katie Kutas (New York Mills/New York Mills) and sophomore midfielder
Hayley Coon (Camden/Taberg) each netted a goal each to pace the Pioneers. Kutas and Coon each tallied four shots on goal on the day, while junior midfielder Elizabeth Knudsen (Rome Free Academy/Rome) added two of her own.
The Pioneers out shot the Saints 22-10, but St. Lawrence made each shot count and slipped three goals past UC senior captain and Empire 8 All-Conference goalie
Amanda McDonnell (Portsmouth Abby/Sagamore Beach, MA). McDonnell stopped seven shots total on the day.
