Utica, N.Y.- The Utica College women's volleyball team won their first match of the season on Saturday against Elms College after dropping the first three contests at the Union Invitational this past weekend.

The Pioneers faced Elms College on Saturday, September 13. Utica College won all three games against the Blazers to give UC their first victory of the season to raise their record to 1-10 overall. Brielle Swerdlin (West Morris Mendham/Chester, NJ) led the team with nine kills while Miranda Austin (Beaver River/Castorland) added 21 assists and Melissa Austin (Beaver River/ Castorland) added seven digs on the weekend.

Hartwick College swept UC in three games during the first game of the tournament. The Pioneers totaled 14 kills and 12 assists during the loss on day one.

The Pioneers won the first game 25-22 against Oswego State but they then swept in the final three games. During the loss Chloe Pierce (Richview/Toronto ON) led the team with nine kills and 19 digs while Miranda Austin added 21 assists.

During the third match, Skidmore College defeated the Pioneers 3-0. Pierce led the Pioneers with eight kills while the Austin sisters both added one block each.

Utica College concluded the tournament 1-3 averaging 5.8 kills, 5.5 assists and 10.9 digs per game. They also added 14 blocks throughout the Invitational. Pierce led Utica with 26 kills and 41 digs and was named All-Tournament Team. Miranda Austin also helped the pioneers with totaling 62 assists.

The Pioneers will host Hamilton College on Wednesday, September 17 at 7 p.m. on the hardwood at the Clark Athletic Center.
