The Utica College women's soccer team (4-8) defeated visiting Hamilton College (6-5)
1-0 on the turf at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium Wednesday afternoon. Senior all conference forward
Danielle Smith (Verona, NY) netted the lone goal of the contest after receiving a long pass from classmate
Kathryn Greene (Latham, NY). Greene's pass just barely got past the last Hamilton defender and to the foot of Smith, who had a full head of steam. Smith ripped the game-winner, her team-best fourth of the season, from 22 yards out into the top right corner in the 28th minute of the contest.
With the win the Pioneers snapped a five game losing streak and they defeated the Continentals for the first time since 2005 when UC pulled out a 1-0 double overtime victory over Hamilton. The Continentals snapped a two game winning streak after the loss.
Hamilton out shot Utica 20-8 on the day and also earned a 8-1 corner kick advantage. The Continentals had several late scoring chances but freshman goalie
Jaime Hillman (Hornell, NY) seemed to be in the right place at the right time en route to stopping eight shots on the day for Utica. The victory marked the first of Hillman's career.
Kate Fowler (Branford, CT) made three saves in 90 minutes of work for Hamilton.
UC returns to Empire 8 Conference action Saturday when it hosts Stevens Institute of Technology at 1 p.m. Live video and stats will be available at www.ucpioneers.com. Hamilton remains on the road Tuesday when they travel to Oneonta, NY for a non conference contest against the Red Dragons of Oneonta State. The contest is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
