The Utica College field hockey team (7-7) lost 2-0 against visiting University of Rochester (10-5) in a non conference contest on the turf at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium Wednesday night. The Yellowjackets netted one goal in each half to win their seventh straight game of the season.
Senior forward
Amanda Case (McLean, VA) and
Anna Dobrzynski (Pittsford, NY), U of R's top two scorers, each netted a goal to pace the Yellowjackets.
Case's opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when she scored off a penalty stroke into the lower right corner of the cage. The goal was just outside the reach of Pioneer goalie
Monica Storms (Owego, NY), who guessed right, but could not quite make the save as Rochester took a 1-0 lead.
Dobrzynski netted an insurance goal in the 60th minute off an assist from freshman defender
Shayna McKie (Manlius, NY). Dobraynski's shot from five yards out ricocheted off of Storms and into the back of the cage.
Storms finished the evening with three saves in net for the Pioneers, while her counterpart,
Danielle Pearson (Ilion, NY) also stopped three shots.
UC had seven penalty corner opportunities compared to Rochester's six, but the Pioneers were out shot 11-5 on the day.
The Pioneers return to action Saturday when they travel to Hartwick College for the biggest game of their season to this point. If the Pioneers win Saturday they can clinch a spot into the Empire 8 Conference tournament. Th game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in Oneonta, NY.
