Elmira, NY – The Utica College men' hockey team knocked off nationally-ranked No. 5 Elmira College 4-3 in ECAC Men's West Conference play Saturday night. Freshman forward Jake Coyle netted two goals and sophomore Sean Timkey added the game-winner with 1:22 left in regulation.
Senior captain Bryce Dale scored the first goal of the night and his fifth on the season 6:47 into the first period, after receiving a pass from Sean McKevitt and Max White.
Elmira tied the score early in the second period when defenseman Sebastian Gulder passed the puck to forward Larry Willard who netted his fourth goal of the season. 3:05 later Jake Coyle scored an unassisted goal, his fifth of the season. The Soaring Eagles finished the period strong posting two more goals giving them a 3-2 advantage heading into the third period.
Jake Coyle knotted the score at three halfway through the third period off a pass from assistant captain Josh Merson. Coyle finished the night with two points and two goals giving him a total of 12 points on the season.
Forward Sean Timkey scored the game-winning goal with 1:22 left in regulation. Vincent Nucci and Josh Merson gave Timkey the assist on the goal. Goalie Justin Bolla won his fifth contest on the season saving 38 shots and improving to 5-6-1 overall. Bolla finished fourth in the conference with a .905 save percentage during the regular season.
The Pioneers finish the regular season 11-11-3 overall and 5-9-1 in conference play, good enough for a fifth place finish in ECAC Men's West standings. UC is set to visit fourth seeded Neumann College on Wednesday Feb. 25, 2009 to start conference playoffs. The puck is set to drop at 7 p.m.
