ONEONTA, NY (March 7, 2009) - Sophomore Tammy Kohanski netted a season-high five goals and added one assist as the Utica College women's lacrosse team (1-1) lost its first game of the season, 20-14, against host Oneonta State (1-2) Saturday afternoon.
The Pioneers are now 0-7 in seven meetings all-time against the Red Dragons.
UC jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 3:23 of play behind unassisted goals from Kohanski and senior Jackie Vicencio. Oneonta answered with four straight goals to take a 4-2 lead with 19:40 to go in the first half of play. The Pioneers netted three of the games next four goals and the contest was knotted at 5-5 mid-way through the first half of play. The Red Dragons netted seven goals in the final 15 minutes of the first half, including five straight goals before halftime and they took a 12-7 lead as the first half clock expired.
28 seconds into the second half of play Kohanski netted her third goal of the game to cut the Red Dragons lead to four goals, 12-8, with 29:32 to go in the contest. Oneonta responded with three straight goals to take a commanding seven goal lead with 20:43 left on the game clock. The Pioneers crawled back with three straight goals, two coming from freshman Katlyn Banker, in the span of 1:31 to cut the Red Dragon lead to 15-11 with 18:04 left in the game. Oneonta outscored UC 5-3 in the final 16:38 of play to earn the six goal victory.
The Pioneers were outshot 32-22 on the day and Oneonta also earned a 25-18 ground ball advantage.
Freshman Shelby Barbay stopped eight shots in her second collegiate start while her counterpart, Annelise Muscietta, stopped six shots in the victory.
Banker finished the day with a career-high four goals while Julianne Schultheiss added one goal and one assist. Sophomore Lily Flskes also netted two goals for the Pioneers.
UC returns to action Tuesday when they host Potsdam State for a non conference match up on the turf at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium. The first draw control is set for 4 p.m.
