UTICA, NY (April 11, 2009) - The Utica College softball team lost a double header against visiting St. John Fisher College on Saturday at Greenman field. The Cardinals blanked the Pioneers 11-0 in game oneafter holding UC to just three hits. Fisher run-ruled Utica 11-3 in five innings in game two.
With the two losses the Pioneers fall to 12-12 overall and 3-5 in the Empire 8 Conference. St. John Fisher improves to 18-6 overall and 6-2 in conference play good enough for second place in the Empire 8.
In game one, the Cardinals jumped out to an early lead when third baseman Kristi Bradley singled to center scoring the first of the 11 Cardinal runs. Junior Samantha Vara led the way for St. John Fisher scoring three runs and picking up two hits in the first game. The Pioneers were held to only three hits and committed four errors in game one of the double header.
Pitcher Amanda Shevchuck pitcher four innings giving up just two hits, winning her eighth game of the season. Chrissy Capalbo finished the game for the Cardinals throwing four innings of work allowing just one hit. Utica sophomore Kristen Levin picked up her seventh loss of the season giving up seven runs and eight hits in four innings.
In game two, the Pioneers were able to answer back, matching a two-run first by the Cardinals in the second innings. Senior captain Rinae Olsen and freshman Rebecca Corsones both smacked a single to set up the inning. Cardinals shortstop Kelly Jones made a throwing error, allowing both Olsen and Corsones to score, knotting the score at 2-2. The Pioneers would add another run in the top of the third inning when sophomore Claire Gerlach doubled to lead off the inning. After Kristin Levin advanced Gerlach on a ground ball, pitcher Andrea Curley then hit a fly ball to right field picking up the sacrifice RBI and giving UC its first lead of the day, 3-2.
St. John Fisher came right back in bottom of the third scoring five runs and then adding two more runs in both the forth a fifth innings. UC was not able to muster up any more offense as they were run-ruled losing the contest 11-3 in five innings.
Senior Amanda Shevechuck grabbed her second win of the day improving her season mark to 9-3. Andrea Curley gave up 11 runs on 14 hits striking out three in her fourth loss of the season.
The Pioneers return to action on Wednesday, April 15 when they host Oswego state. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
