ONEONTA, NY – (April 15, 2009) The Utica College women's lacrosse team used ten second half goals to defeat host Hartwick College 16-7 in Empire 8 Conference play Wednesday afternoon. Sophomore
Tammy Kohanski (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) netted a game-high six goals and added one assist, while classmate
Julianne Schultheiss (Commack, NY/Commack) added five points on three goals and two assists.
With the win UC holds third place in Empire 8 standings with a 7-4 overall record including a 4-2 mark in conference play, beating the Hawks for only the second time in the program-history. The Hawks fall to 1-9 overall and remain winless in the conference with a 0-4 mark.
Midfielder
Tammy Kohanski (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) led the first half scoring, picking up four goals. Kohanski's first one of the day came just 53 seconds into the game and then she scored again just 1:23 later. After two goals from sophomore
Lily Fleskes (Dover, MA/Dover Sherborn) and senior
Laura Keating (Whitesboro, NY/Horseheads), the Pioneers held a commanding 4-0 lead. Hartwick was only able to come up with four goals in the first 30 minutes of play. Emily Piedigrossi led the Hawks with two scores in the first half, combining with goals from freshman Emily Walsh and sophomore Tiffanie Bishop. The Pioneers went into halftime with a two-goal advantage, looking to build on their lead.
The Pioneers netted six straight goals over the course of 10:24 early in the second half to extend their lead to seven goals, 12-5, with 15:53 to go in the contest. Sophomore
Julianne Schultheiss (Commack, NY/Commack) netted three goals and picked up one assist in the second half, while senior classmates
Jackie Vicencio (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) and
Laura Keating (Whitesboro, NY/Horseheads) both netted two goals of their own. The Pioneers defense proved to be too much for the Hawks, allowing only three goals and eight shots on goal in the final 30 minutes of play.
Freshman
Shelby Barbay (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) picked up her seventh win of the season, stopping nine shots and snagging two ground balls. Sophomore Jen Kaye compiled 11 saves in her ninth loss for the Hawks. The Pioneers were able to pick up 25 groundballs, led by
Jackie Vicencio (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) who scooped up five of her own, and they also out shot the Hawks 37-17.
The Pioneers return to action when they travel to Keuka College on April 22, in their final non-conference game of the year. The match is set to begin at 4 p.m.
