UC LOSES FINAL GAME TO ST. JOHN FISHER

The Utica College men's tennis team lost 8-1 in an Empire 8 conference battle against St. John Fisher to close out the 2009 campaign. In singles competition, senior Tom Armitage picked up the only win for the Pioneers, while Fisher was able to take all three matches in doubles competition.

The Pioneers finish the season with a 1-8 overall record, with their only win coming against
Alfred University 15-4 on April 18, 2009.  The Cardinals improved to 7-12 and stand in fifth place in the conference standings, just shy of a playoff berth.

UC lost its first five singles matches until Tom Armitage ended his collegiate career win an epic battle against the Cardinals Chris Maley. Maley took the first set 6-4, but Armitage fired right back winning the second set 6-4, bringing the game to a third and final set. Neither player would let down, matching point-for-point until Armitage pulled away to win the set 10-8. Armitage finished the season with two singles wins matching his 2008 season-high.

Three other Pioneers were able to post four points in their singles matches including Shaun Kaleta, Thein Doan and Gonzalo Carrascal. In doubles Gonzalo Carrascal and Gonzalo Salama fell short to John Whelehan and Chris Maley, but were able to score six points in the match, a team-high for the day in doubles.

The Pioneers will lose three seniors, Tom Armitage. Gonzalo Carrascal and Khoa Vo to graduation and will look to the nine returning freshman to help pave the way.
