UTICA VOLLEYBALL EARNS LOCAL BRAGGING RIGHTS

Melissa Austin '10 recorded 10 kills and eight digs to lead visiting Utica College to a four-set victory against Hamilton College in a non-conference women's volleyball match played at Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Sept. 16.

Chloe Pierce '12 added nine kills and a team-high 14 digs for Utica, while Brielle Swerdlin '10 chipped in eight kills, eight digs and four aces.

Ally Martella '13 paced Hamilton with a match-high 12 kills and three blocks. Amanda Cohen '13 posted 11 kills and Rachel Irizarry '12 led the defense with 19 digs.

The Pioneers (6-4 overall) won the first two sets, 25-19 and 25-17. The Continentals (2-7) roared back to take the third set by a score of 25-20. In the fourth set, Utica scored the first two points and never trailed. Hamilton stayed close throughout the set and pulled within one point twice late at 22-21 and 24-23, but couldn't get over the hump.

Hamilton competes in SUNY Plattsburgh's Cardinal Classic on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 18 and 19. The Pioneers travel to Union College this weekend for its tournament.
