Sophomore forward
Jeremy Pierce (Cheshire, MA) fed a streaking
Jonathan Wood (Derry, NH) up the left side and Wood ripped the game-winning goal into the top right corner from 18 yards out as the Utica College men's soccer team knocked off regional power Union, 1-0, with 8:25 to go in double overtime at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium Friday night.
Junior goalie
Kevin Murphy (West Islip, NY) stopped 12 shots and earned his second shut out of the season for the Pioneers. Utica persevered through 25 shots and nine Union corners, including five in the second half, to earn the key non conference victory and snap a two-game slide.
Wood's first collegiate goal could not have come at a more opportune time as the Pioneers snapped a seven game losing streak against Union dating back to 2002. Also, Utica avenged a 1-0 double overtime loss at the hands of the Dutchmen in the Fall of 2004.
Each team had several nice chances throughout the contest but could not convert in regulation and the Pioneers needed extra time to sneak a goal past Union keeper
Adam Marguilies (Newtown, CT), who finished the day with five saves over 100 minutes of work. The Pioneers held the Dutchmen to three shots in overtime as they improved to 2-3 overall on the year.
Union has now lost two straight after opening up the season 3-0.
The Pioneers return to action Sunday when they host SUNYIT on the turf at Gaetano Stadium. Live video and stats will be available at
www.ucpioneers.com for the contest that begins at 3 p.m.
