The Utica College men's hockey team won its second game in four days behind two goals and one assist from senior forward Matt Fitzgibbons as the Pioneers defeated visiting Brockport State 5-1 Tuesday night. Scott Wentworth added three assists and Tim Coffman posted two points on one goal and one assist.
Junior goalie Justin Bolla stopped 28 shots and allowed just one goal midway through the third period in his second straight victory. The Golden Eagles lone goal of the contest came on a 6-on-4 power play opportunity.
Senior assistant captain Sean McKevitt opened the scoring on the evening with his fourth goal of the season just 3:23 into the first period of play. Sean Dunn and Dave Burkholder assisted on the goal which gave UC a 1-0 lead. Just over two minutes later the Pioneers netted the eventual game-winner from the stick of team leading scorer Tim Coffman. Coffman's 11th goal of the season was assisted by Scott Wentworth and freshman defender Roberts Etts at the 5:32 mark of the first.
Dunn added his first collegiate goal midway through the second period to give the Pioneers a commanding 3-0 lead. Wentworth and Fitzgibbons were each credited with an assist on the goal. 2:25 before the end of the second period Fitzgibbons gave Utica a 4-0 lead when he scored his sixth goal of the season off of assists from Coffman and senior Vincent Nucci.
Brockport opened the third period scoring when James Cody scored his sixth goal of the season with less than seven minutes to go in the contest.
Fitzgibbons closed out the scoring on the day with 1:03 to go in the contest to give Utica the four goal victory. Wentworth added his third assist of the evening on the game's final goal.
Brockport outshot Utica 29-27 in the game and each team scored one power play goal. Todd Sheridan and Oliver Wren combined for 23 saves in net for the Golden Eagles.
The Pioneers improved to 6-6-3 overall after Tuesday night's victory, while the Golden Eagles dropped to 6-8.
Utica returns to action on Thursday night when they host Curry College for the Pioneers final non conference contest of the season at 7 p.m. Brockport returns to action on Friday when they travel to Lebanon Valley for the first of a two game set against the Dutchmen.
