BOX SCORE
The Utica College men's soccer team snapped a seven game winning streak Saturday with a 3-2 loss to Empire 8 Conference foe Nazareth College. Senior
Roberto Sgueglia (Schenectady, NY/Mohonasen) netted one goal and added one assist to pace the visiting Pioneers (7-2, 1-1 E8).
UC, which ranked 10th in the region headed into the contest, jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, 4:40 into the contest, when Sgueglia connected with junior defender
Shane Witteman to put UC on top early.
Nazareth (3-5-2, 2-0-0 E8) went on to net three consecutive goals over the course of the next 35:44 of play to earn a three goal lead. Sgueglia and the Pioneers would not go down easy though as he netted his ninth tally of the season in the 66th minute to cut the Golden Flyers lead to just one, 3-2, with under 25 minutes to play in the game. Sophomore
DJ Ilebani (Abuja, Nigeria/Intl. School of Kenya) assisted on the Pioneers' lone goal of the second half.
Unfortunately for Utica 3-2 was as close as the Pioneers would get as the final horn sounded with Naz up by one goal.
Freshman keeper
Anthony Caruso (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow) made a career-high ten saves in net for Utica, while his counterpart Kyle Connolly stopped four shots on the opposite end.
The Pioneers will look to get back on the wagon tomorrow as they travel across town to take on RIT in a conference match up. The contest is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
