PIONEERS EARN THIRD STRAIGHT VICTORY

Rochester, N.Y. 10/20/2010 – The Utica College field hockey team defeated The University of Rochester 2-1 on Wednesday for its third straight victory. The Pioneers, now 7-7 and 3-1 in Empire 8 play, are one win away from qualifying for the conference tournament.

Senior Sarah Keller (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown) started off the scoring for Utica, netting her second goal of the season off of a rebound shot just 11 minutes into the game. Junior Mallory Mariano (Oneida, NY/Vernon Verona Sherrill) would put her fifth goal of the season in the back of the net just 15 minutes later to give the Pioneers are 2-0 lead.

The Yellowjacket responded a minute later with a goal of their own by Anna Dobrzynski to bring them within one goal of the Pioneers.

Utica was able to hold Rochester off for the rest of the game. The
Pioneers held an 11-7 shot advantage over the Yellowjackets.

Junior goalkeeper Monica Storms (Owego, NY/Owego) only allowed one goal through 70 minutes of play.

The Pioneers host Empire 8 foe Elmira College this Saturday. The contest is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
