The Utica College men's soccer team has made a name for itself in the national spotlight this season headed into Wednesday night's non conference clash with SUNY Cobleskill. The Pioneers (10-4-1) are on the verge of a school-record 11 wins and they currently rank fourth in the country (377 teams) with 46 total goals this season.
UC's offense, ranked tenth in the nation averaging 3.07 goals per game, is led by senior
Roberto Sgueglia (Schenectady, NY/Mohonasen) along with freshmen
Trevor Hoxsie (Scarborough, ME/Scarborough) and
Jonathon Peterson (Bedford, NH/New Hampton). Sgueglia, who recently broke the school-record for points in a single-season, currently ranks second in the nation with 35 points. His 2.33 points per game average is third in the nation and he also ranks third in the country with 11 assists.
Hoxsie ranks third in the conference and 88th in the nation with 20 points this season, while Peterson has totaled 18 points. Senior
David Garcia (Fairport, NY/Fairport) has provided a great spark off the bench with ten points (four goals/two assists).
With a win over the Fighting Tigers on Wednesday night the Pioneers would eclipse the school-record for wins in a single-season set by the 2007 team which went 10-9 and advanced to the Empire 8 Conference Tournament for the first time in program-history.
The Pioneers will need the offensive output to continue in their final two games of the season if they plan on making the Empire 8 Tournament again this year. Utica hosts St. John Fisher College Saturday night at 7 p.m., before traveling to nationally-ranked No. 5 Stevens Institute of Technology for the regular season finale on Oct. 30th.
