Utica, N.Y. (10/23/10) - The Utica College men's soccer team's storied season continued Saturday night as the Pioneers downed visiting St. John Fisher College 3-0 in Empire 8 Conference action. The Pioneers (12-4-1, 3-2-1 E8) advanced their program-best win total to 12 and remained in the hunt for a chance to play in the Empire 8 Conference Tournament. Junior forward Jonathan Wood (Derry, NH/Pinkerton) came alive with the game's first two goals, while freshman Jonathon Peterson (Bedford, NH/New Hampton) added his ninth goal of the season to seal the victory for UC. All three goals came in the first 35 minutes of the contest.

Fisher (2-11-1, 1-5 E8) was out shot 10-3 on the day and had sporadic chances on offense but the Pioneers defense was able to preserve freshman goalie Anthony Caruso (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow)'s 11th win of the season.

Wood opened the scoring in the ninth minute when he netted his fourth tally of the season after he drilled home a high ball sent into the box by senior Kyle Tassone (Altamont, NY/Guilderland). In the 31st minute Wood added his second goal of the game off an assist from freshman midfielder Jeffrey Cupka (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional) to give the Pioneers a commanding 2-0 lead. Wood's fifth goal of the season was scored from 12 yards out into the lower right side of the net.

Peterson closed out the scoring just under three minutes later when he chipped a shot over Fisher goalie Robert Weigand's head to put the game out of reach. Senior Diego Berkeymeyer assisted on the Pioneers' third and final goal of the game.

Both teams were held scoreless in the second half as Utica earned the much deserved three goal victory.

UC returns to action next Saturday when it heads to nationally-ranked No. 3 Stevens Institute of Technology for a key Empire 8 Conference contest in Hoboken, N.J. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
