The Utica College men's soccer team (7-2-1) will host SUNY Canton (5-4) for the first time in program-history on Wednesday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium. The Pioneers look to get back to their winning ways after a tough weekend at Nazareth (L, 3-2) and RIT (T, 2-2), respectively.
“This past weekend was an excellent conference road test for our young squad. We demonstrated great resilience on Sunday against RIT. Our team has been able to chase games all season long,” said second year Head Coach Joe Calabrese. “We expect our team to play with a focused effort for 90 minutes tomorrow night against Canton.”
SUNY Canton, currently ranked second in the Sunrise Conference, heads into Wednesday's matchup with a three game winning streak and the Roos have outscored their opponents 7-2 in that span. Canton is led by Chris Cumella who has team-high four goals and eight points this year. Vixama Loocken has two goals, two assists and six points and Flores Homero has two shut outs in seven games played.
The Pioneers, who are currently ranked fourth in the E8, come out of conference play with a record of 1-1-1 and hope that a matchup with the Roos will lead to another streak after snapping a seven game win streak at Nazareth on Saturday. UC welcomes back freshman forward
Trevor Hoxsie (Scarborough, ME/Scarborough) who missed one game after a collision with the Nazareth goalie on Saturday. Senior
Roberto Sgueglia (Schenectady, NY/Mohonasen) still leads the Pioneers with nine goals, seven assists and 25 points. He is trailed closely by Hoxsie, who has six goals and 15 points.
