The Utica College mens' soccer team's storied season continued Wednesday night as the Pioneers got back on the wagon with a convincing 5-0 victory over visiting Canton in non conference play on the turf at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium. Freshman
Jonathon Peterson (Bedford, NH/New Hampton) tallied two goals, while senior
Roberto Sgueglia (Schenectady, NY/Mohonasen) added two assists as the Pioneers improved to 8-2-1 overall on the year.
The contest proved to be a good tune up for the Pioneers as they head into a key Empire 8 Conference match-up at league leading Elmira College Saturday afternoon. Canton could only muster three shots on the evening as the Kangaroos' evened their record at 5-5 with the loss.
Peterson opened the scoring on the evening when he headed home his sixth collegiate goal after a beautifully placed crossing pass from Sgueglia in the 17th minute. Just under three minutes later freshman
Alex Sheridan (East Islip, NY/St. John the Baptist) got in on the act when he ripped home his second goal of the season into the top right corner after a feed from classmate
Trevor Hoxsie (Scarborough, ME/Scarborough) to give the Pioneers' a convincing 2-0 lead.
In the 24th minute Peterson chipped in his second goal of the night after a nice lead pass from classmate
Alex Germaine (Derry, NH/Pinkerton Academy) to put UC on top, 3-0.
In the second half the Pioneers continued to pile on the scoring when freshman defender
Chris Ferullo (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) headed his first collegiate goal into the back of the net off a crossing pass from senior
David Garcia (Fairport, NY/Fairport). Freshman
Alec Choleva (Coventry, CT/East Catholic) closed out the scoring on the day in the 81st minute when he headed in his first collegiate goal of a corner kick from Sgueglia.
The Pioneers outshot the Roos 23-3 on the day and also earned an 11-1 corner kick advantage in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
Freshman goalies
Anthony Caruso (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow) and
Andrew Boniche (Trumbull, CT/St. Luke's) combined for the Pioneers' third shutout of the season. Canton goalie Homero Flores tallied nine saves in the loss.
The Pioneers head back on the road Saturday to take on Elmira at 12 p.m.
