Charest netted the Pioneers' lone goal of the contest

Utica, N.Y. (11/13/2010) - The Utica College men's hockey team fended off the nation's second ranked team for the majority of the contest but Oswego State netted two goals in a span of 4:56 midway through the third period to earn a 3-1 victory in front of 3,624 fans at the Utica Memorial Saturday night.

Oswego advanced its record to 8-0 on the year,  while the Pioneers dropped to 5-2.  The shots were deadlocked at 20-20 by the end of the contest and it appeared to be an evenly matched game outside of the five minute span in the third period where the Lakers knocked in two goals. 

After a 0-0 stalemate through one full period of play Utica freshman Steve Charest (Amqui, Quebec/Walpole Express (AJHL)) opened the scoring in the second period when he netted his third goal of the season to the crowds delight 4:18 into the stanza.  Sophomore Evan Chlanda (Islip, NY/Springfield (EJHL)) and Trever Hertz (Jaffray, British Columbia/Quesnel Millionaires (BCHL)) each tallied an assist on the Pioneers' lone goal of the evening.

The Lakers answered back 3:08 later when sophomore Paul Rodrigues scored his first of two goals, on the power-play, to knot the score at 1-1. 

Rodrigues also registered the game-winner 8:49 into the third period and he assisted on Oswego's insurance goal from the stick of Jon Whitelaw with less than seven minutes to go. 

Utica goalie Nick Therrien (Rochester, NH/NY Apple Core (EJHL)) stopped 17 shots in his first collegiate loss while his counterpart Paul Beckwith made 18 saves.

Oswego went 1-for-4 on the power-play while the Pioneers went 0-for-2 with a one man advantage. 

The Pioneers return to the ice Friday night when they host Neumann University, for game three of a five game homestand, in an ECAC Men's West Conference contest at the Aud. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7 p.m.
