The Utica College softball team went 0-2 on its second day at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Florida Monday. The Pioneers overall record is now 1-3. UC lost game one 18-5 against McDaniel before falling 7-1 in the night cap against Millikin. Over the course of two games, junior center fielder Kim Martin went 4-for-7 at the dish with three runs scored and one double. Freshman shortstop Jackie Gallagher kept her solid hitting performance in tact by going 3-for-7 at the plate with two runs scored.
In game one the Pioneers kept the game within reach in the first three innings. UC jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning after Martin set the tone with a single to left field. UC took advantage of three straight errors by McDaniel to score Martin, and Elizabeth Dennis ripped an RBI single to left field to score Gallagher as the Pioneers took a one run advantage.
McDaniel tacked on four runs in the top of the third but UC answered right back by loading the bases in the bottom half of the inning. Bridgette Plummer scored Martin on a sacrifice fly and Gallagher scored on a wild pitch to cut the Pioneers deficit to 5-4 headed into the fourth inning.
Unfortunately the Pioneers surrendered 13 runs in the final four innings, including a six run top half of the seventh to lose the contest by 13 runs.
The Pioneers could not seem to get the bats going in game two as they dropped a 7-1 decision to Millikin. The Pioneers lone run of the contest came after senior Angel Donaghue walked and stole second, followed by an RBI single to center field from Gallagher.
UC returns to action on Tuesday when it squares off against Rutgers-Newark and Framingham State in back-to-back contests at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., respectively.
