UC SWEEPS CAZENOVIA IN FIRST GAMES UP NORTH

The Utica College softball team dominated play during a double header Wednesday and picked up their first two regular season victories at Cazenovia. UC defeated the Wildcats 7-2 in game one before earning an 11-5 win in game two.

In game one, the Pioneers jumped out to a three run lead after three innings. Center Kim Martin (Prospect, N.Y.) started the first inning with a single. Martin would advance to third on a Jackie Gallagher (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) single, and would eventually score on a wild pitch. Bridgette Plummer (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) drove in Gallagher on an RBI double to left field. In the fourth inning Cazenovia pulled to within two runs after a one run homer to left field. UC quickly answered back in the fifth inning with two runs from Martin and Gallagher off of two more wild pitches. The Pioneers would pull away from the Wildcats in the sixth inning with a two-run RBI off of a Martin single.

Madison Dinsmore (Theresa, N.Y.) only allowed two runs on eight hits along with four strikeouts in seven innings pitched.

In the second game, UC opened the floodgates early scoring six runs in the first two innings. After an RBI double by Plummer, Hannah Barton (Adams Basin, N.Y.) drove in a three-run homerun. Haley Butler (New Hartford, N.Y.) started on the mound for the Pioneers and had six strikeouts in four innings. Stephanie Romanow (New Hartford, N.Y.) would relieve Butler in the fifth inning and strikeout five in three innings. The Pioneers would go on to score five more runs that included a two-run homer from Courtney Rainbow (Truxton, N.Y.).

UC walked a total of four batters and had only three errors in two games and left a combined total of nine runners on base.

The Pioneers return to action March 28 to take on the Skidmore Thoroughbreds. The game will begin at 1 p.m. at Skidmore College.
