The Utica College softball team won both of its games Sunday as part of a double header against Skidmore where they won 3-2 in the first game and 8-6 in the second. The Pioneers were led by junior Kim Martin (Prospect, NY) and freshman Jackie Gallagher who went a combined 4-for-10 with two RBI's and 3-for-8 with two RBI's, respectively.
Freshman Stephanie Romanow took the mound for the Pioneers in the first game as she pitched a commanding eight innings allowing seven hits and two runs. Both teams were held scoreless through seven innings and the contest was sent to extra innings with score tied at 0-0. The Pioneers were first to get on the board in the top of the eighth as Elizabeth Dennis (Canastota, NY) singled to right field scoring Gallagher from third. Following a ground ball error by the shortstop, Claire Gerlach (Williamsville, NY) reached first and Dennis would score from third to give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead.
UC allowed a comeback by the Thoroughbreds in the second half of the inning as Lauren Dinsdale's single to center drove in two runs to tie the game up at two. In the top of the tenth the Pioneers loaded the bases for Hannah Barton (Adams Basin, NY) and she hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Martin from third and the Pioneers went on to win 3-2.
In the second half of its double header, UC jumped out to an early lead as errors and passed balls by the Thoroughbreds led to an early 2-0 lead. After falling behind 5-2 after three innings, the Pioneers were able to get their bats going in the fifth. Utica College retook the lead as an error by the third baseman scored pinch runner Shannon Bailey (Clarksburg, NJ) from third. The Pioneers went on to win 8-6 as Madison Dinsmore (Theresa, NY) improved to 4-2 on the season.
Utica College improves to 7-7 overall as the Skidmore falls to 7-7.
The Pioneers will play their next game Wednesday against SUNY IT at Greenman Softball Field with an expected start time of 3:30 p.m.
